The Thessaloniki Metro is a means of fixed track transportation that provides safe, direct, and fast access to the city. It is an Automated GoA4 system with two single-track tunnels.

It consists of Line 1, which is 9.6 km long, and the Extension of Line 1 to Kalamaria, which is 4.6 km long and will be operational in the summer of 2026. In total, the Thessaloniki Metro has 18 underground stations, 13 of which are along Line 1 and 5 along the Extension of Line 1 to Kalamaria.

The majority of the lines pass under major roadways and key points of the city, serving densely populated areas, commercial centers, educational, entertainment, health, and sports facilities.

The starting point of Line 1 is located in the northwestern part of the city at the “New Railway Station” station, in the exterior space of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) building. The line crosses through central areas and ends in the southeastern part at the “Nea Elvetia” station. The underground line runs along the axes of Monastiriou, Egnatia, N. Egnatia, Delfon, and Solonos streets.

The stations are equipped with elevators and escalators to meet accessibility needs, as well as surveillance cameras and trained personnel for the passenger’s safety.

The Thessaloniki Metro also has a depot in the area of Pylea. This is the parking area for the trains, as well as for maintenance and repairs of the rolling stock. The operations control center is also located at the depot, which acts as the “brain” of the network.

The design and construction of the Thessaloniki Metro were carried out by Elliniko Metro S.A., with its specialized scientific staff and the assistance of the best global contractors in metro construction, completing a network with high specifications, excellent infrastructure, and top-tier technology.
