Environmental Sustainability

The Thessaloniki Metro is bringing not only an upgraded experience for our daily commutes but also numerous and significant benefits for the environment.

By reducing car usage and opting for the Metro as an electric means of transport, we will all contribute to lowering CO2 emissions. The quality of the air will improve, making our city cleaner and more livable.

The Automatic GoA4 System features real-time control and monitoring mechanisms for the trains, optimizing performance and reducing the ecological footprint.

One of the key environmental advantages of this system is that it maximizes energy efficiency by converting kinetic energy into electrical energy, which can be reused to power the train or returned to the grid.

Additionally, the accuracy of automated functions leads to reduced energy consumption by allowing better speed control for the trains, resulting in smoother acceleration and deceleration. Notably, there will also be a significant reduction in energy consumption for tunnel ventilation, which can often reach up to 80%, achieved through the movement of the trains.

Finally, the installation of energy-efficient equipment on the trains and at the stations, along with “smart” control and energy management systems (such as escalators that stop when not in use), will ensure optimal resource use. Correspondingly, proactive maintenance, driven by continuous data monitoring and analysis, will extend the lifespan of equipment, reduce the need for frequent replacements, conserve raw materials, and limit waste.
