13 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at Thessaloniki Metro Stations

The Thessaloniki Metro, with the primary goal of protecting human life and enhancing the safety of passengers and visitors, has installed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at every station.

Each AED is located at the ticketing level across all 13 stations of the network and can be used in emergency situations, either within or near the stations, by citizens or healthcare professionals until an ambulance arrives.

The Importance of Immediate Intervention

Timely response to a sudden cardiac arrest is critical for the patient’s survival. Every minute of delay reduces the chances of successful resuscitation by 7% to 10%.

The person providing First Aid must:
• Maintain self-control
• Act calmly
• Ensure safety for themselves and the patient

Use & Safety

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed for use in emergency situations where immediate medical assistance is not available and can be used by any citizen over the age of twelve.

The devices feature voice prompts that guide the user step by step, without requiring any specialized training.

It is important to note that if the person does not require defibrillation (e.g., in the case of a simple fainting episode), the device will not deliver an electric shock. Automated External Defibrillators are equipped with safety mechanisms that prevent misuse by automatically locking their function, thereby avoiding any further harm to the patient.

Automated External Defibrillator Equipment

Each defibrillator includes:
• Adult pads (inside the device)
• Pediatric pads (in the external case), suitable for ages 1 to 8
• Trauma shears for quick and safe removal of clothing
• A dedicated razor

The metal cabinet housing the AED is equipped with an audible alarm that is triggered when the cabinet is opened.

Please note that the alarm is not connected to the Thessaloniki Metro’s Operations Control Center (OCC).

The Thessaloniki Metro’s Automated External Defibrillators are registered on the National Defibrillator Map of the Kids Save Lives organization.
