The Thessaloniki Metro was awarded as the “Project of the Year 2024” – ypodomes.gr

For another year, during the Infrastructure and Transport Conference – ITC 2025, the award for Project of the Year was presented.

For 2024, the Thessaloniki Metro emerged as the winner after multiple rounds of voting by journalists, institutional bodies, and the general public.

The award was received by leading representatives of all stakeholders involved in the project, including the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, the CEO of Elliniko Metro, Nikos Kouretas, and Anastasios Aranitis, representative of the consortium AKTOR–WEBUILD–HITACHI.

Taking the floor, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Dimas described the Thessaloniki Metro as “the most beautiful he has ever seen,” while urging those who have not yet visited it to do so. Mr. Dimas added that “The Thessaloniki Metro is not just an extremely useful and important project for the city, as it has already reduced the number of vehicles in the city center by 15%, but it also constitutes a ‘living’ museum. In particular, the ‘Venizelou’ station is perhaps the most beautiful metro station in the world. Every station of the Thessaloniki Metro showcases the cultural heritage of the country, of our region, of Thessaloniki itself, in an exceptional way. In a few months, we will also inaugurate the 5 additional new stations with the extension towards Kalamaria.”

Expressing his joy and pride for the project and the award, the CEO of Elliniko Metro, Mr. Kouretas, during the award acceptance, thanked the employees of Elliniko Metro, emphasizing that the award belongs to them, while also expressing his gratitude to the competent services of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and to the collaborating organizations that contributed to the project’s delivery into operation in November 2024.

Subsequently, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure issues, Nikos Tachiaos, noted that the Thessaloniki Metro is a project that changed the psychology of the city and its residents. As he said: “Something similar should be expected for Athens within the next decade, when Line 4 will be delivered, a Metro of equivalent quality. Thessaloniki has managed to remind us how great a priority public transport truly is. Many congratulations therefore to Elliniko Metro for completing the project, as well as for completing the Kalamaria extension by March 2026.”

Finally, Anastasios Aranitis, representative of the consortium AKTOR–WEBUILD–HITACHI, expressed his joy at receiving the award, while also thanking the people of AKTOR who contributed to the project’s realization, as well as Elliniko Metro, which was a key pillar of the project’s success, and the Ministry itself. As he stated: “We at AKTOR set the bar high. We must understand that the Greek technical community is capable of implementing truly grand projects, projects that are difficult and complex. The country’s engineering community is truly of a very high level.”

At the same time, the Special Award “Construction Achievement of the Year 2024” was received by TITAN Group for its contribution to the construction of the Thessaloniki Metro and the scale of the concreting it carried out, as the Group supported all phases of the project’s construction, contributing with its specialized products to the quality and long-term durability of a technically demanding project.
